Origin of October

The name “October” comes from the Latin octo, meaning “eight.” This is because, in the original Roman calendar (traditionally attributed to Romulus, c. 753 BCE), October was the eighth month of a 10-month calendar year that began in March. However, around 713 BCE, King Numa Pompilius made changes to the calendar by adding January and February, expanding it to 12 months. This shifted October to the tenth position, yet its name was never updated to reflect its new place in the year.

Those born in October have two birthstones: Opal and Tourmaline. Each carries its own symbolism as follows:

Ancient Romans symbolized it for hope and purity. The Harlequin Opal, with its mosaic-like color patches, is among the rarest and most prized varieties.
  • Tourmaline comes in a spectrum of colors but the most popular varieties are pink and green. It symbolizes protection, compassion and balance. Ancient mystics used it to ward off negative energy.

Birth Flowers of October

October is associated with two birth flowers, namely, marigold and cosmos. Marigold symbolizes passion and creativity while Cosmos represents harmony and balance.

October Zodiac Signs
